Almost everyone knows that itchy, stingy feeling of getting an eye stye and we all wish it would go away just as quickly as it came. Read below to learn everything you need to know about home remedies for eye stye, how to treat eye stye correctly, and how to prevent eye stye in the future!
What is an eye stye?
A stye is an infection that causes a red, painful lump (sort of like a pimple), on the inside or outside of the eyelid. It is an abscess filled with pus. Most styes occur along the edge of the eyelid. An eyelid cyst, also known as a chalazion, is like a stye, but it is usually larger and less painful.
What causes eye styes?
Styes occur when a gland in the eyelid is blocked. This can occur if the gland’s opening is obstructed by a foreign substance like make-up, dead skin, oil build-up of dust. When a gland is blocked, bacteria can grow inside. This is what causes a stye to develop.
How to prevent eye stye?
Another cause for eye stye is touching or rubbing your eyes, especially with unwashed hands, dirty contact lenses, leaving make-up on overnight or poor hygiene. The best prevention is thus keeping your hands away from your eyes and removing make-up as soon as you can after wearing it.
Are eye styes dangerous?
Styes or eyelid cysts can be annoying and painful but are rarely serious. Most eyelid cysts heal on their own within 2 to 8 weeks. However, you can use some home remedies for eye styes to help them heal faster.
The best home remedies for eye styes:
Remedy no. 1: Eyebright
One of the most popular herbal remedies for styes is eyebright, an herb that is actually named for its ability to clear up eye infections. This herb is full of chemical compounds that can clear up the infection and reduce the swelling and redness. Typically, you can find eyebright in dried form. You can create an infusion of eyebright by boiling added water, straining out the herb, and applying the cooled liquid to the closed eye.
Remedy no. 2: Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar has great anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, therefore it helps reduce inflammation and even fight infection.
Put 2 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar in a cup of hot water. Soak a cotton ball in this solution and apply it on the affected area for about a minute. Follow this remedy three times daily for a few days.
Remedy no. 3: Teabag Compress
Boil water and drop the teabag in a mug. Let the tea steep, then put the teabag out and wait until it cools enough to place over your eye. Keep it on your eye for about 5 minutes. Chamomile works best because it helps reduce swelling and has some antibacterial properties.
Remedy no. 4: Don’t touch or squeeze
Try your best not to touch or rub your eyes. It might seem tempting to pop a stye, but squeezing it can cause more problems. Releasing the pus will likely spread the infection. Let the stye drain on its own or have a medical professional drain it for you.
Remedy no. 5: Avoid makeup and contact lenses
Don’t try to put makeup over a stye. It can delay the healing process by irritating the eye even more. If you wear contact lenses, stick with glasses until your stye heals. Bacteria from the stye can get onto the contacts and spread the infection.
Remedy no. 6: Clean it
One of the most important steps involved during eye stye is to keep your eyes clean. Wash your eyes with clean water for at least five to six times daily. This will check the infection from growing more. Also, that will result in the faster healing process of your eyes.
